Anindita Chakraborty

Anindita was born and raised in Tripura, India. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) at the Government College of Art and Craft, Tripura, before pursuing her Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the University of Hyderabad in 2007. Her artistic practice is deeply rooted in self-portraiture and lived experiences where she interrogates, questions and reimagine notions of identity. Her studio research also draws inspiration from the Pre-Raphaelite movement in Western art history, exploring its thematic and stylistic resonances in contemporary contexts of cultural practice involving clothing. In particular, she draws her attention towards the depiction of elegant costumes and narrative rhythms connecting distinctive elements of her painted images, including postures and gazes. Interpretation of literary subjects and the usage of colour in those paintings has encouraged and inspired her studio practice since 2008.

She has been awarded with the Junior Fellowship in Visual Arts from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India (2016–2017), and the Shrishti Art Gallery-American India Foundation Grant (2020). She worked as a visiting faculty at Jawaharlal Nehru Architecture and Fine Arts University from 2016–2023, Hyderabad, India and at the Ashoka School of Planning and Architecture from 2022-2023, Hyderabad, India.

Ani’s work has been exhibited internationally, including in India, Canada, and Lithuania. Currently based in Montreal, Canada, she continues her artistic practice while engaging with the city’s vibrant cultural landscape.
